Understanding and Treating Viral Conjunctivitis (Abhishyanda): An Ayurvedic Approach

Introduction: Viral conjunctivitis, commonly known as “pink eye,” is a highly contagious eye infection caused by various viruses. It leads to inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin, transparent layer that covers the front surface of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids. Viral conjunctivitis is characterized by redness, itching, tearing, and a gritty sensation in the eyes. While conventional medical treatments exist, Ayurveda offers a holistic approach to managing viral conjunctivitis. In this article, we will delve into the details of viral conjunctivitis and explore Ayurvedic treatments that can provide relief and promote healing.

Understanding Viral Conjunctivitis:

Viral conjunctivitis is primarily caused by adenoviruses, though other viruses such as herpes simplex virus and varicella-zoster virus can also be culprits. The infection is highly contagious and spreads through direct contact with infected individuals, contaminated surfaces, or respiratory droplets.

 Symptoms of Viral Conjunctivitis:

  • Redness and swelling of the eyes.
  • Watery or clear discharge.
  • Gritty or foreign body sensation.
  • Itching and burning in the eyes.
  • Sensitivity to light (photophobia).
  • Crusty eyelids, especially in the morning.

Ayurvedic Perspective on Viral Conjunctivitis:

In Ayurveda, the eyes are considered one of the most delicate and vital organs. Viral conjunctivitis is believed to occur due to an imbalance in the Pitta dosha, leading to inflammation and discomfort. Ayurvedic treatments aim to balance the doshas and promote overall eye health. According to Ayurveda, if conjunctivitis is not treated then it is converted into glaucoma (Adhimantha).

Modern Treatments Approaches:

Eye Drops: antiviral eye drops can help inhibit viral replication, easing symptoms and expediting recovery.

Artificial Tears: Lubricating eye drops alleviate dryness and discomfort.

Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress can help reduce redness and swelling.

Ayurvedic Treatments for Viral Conjunctivitis (Abhishyanda):

Triphala Eye Wash (Netradhara): Triphala, a combination of three fruits (Amalaki, haritaki, and bibhitaki), is known for its potent antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. A gentle eye wash using Triphala decoction can help soothe irritation and reduce inflammation.

Rose Water Compress: Rose water has cooling and soothing effects on the eyes. Soak a clean cloth or cotton ball in rose water and place it over closed eyes for a few minutes to alleviate discomfort.

Ghee Application (Anjana): Applying a few drops of ghee to the eyelids can help lubricate the eyes and provide relief from dryness and itching.

Ayurvedic Diet: Emphasize cooling and Pitta-balancing foods such as cucumber, coconut, and leafy greens. Avoid spicy, oily, and sour foods that may aggravate Pitta.

Herbal Supplements: Ayurvedic herbs like Amla (Indian gooseberry), Neem, and Turmeric have immune-boosting and anti-inflammatory properties that can support the body’s natural healing processes.

Eye Hygiene Techniques: Regularly washing hands, avoiding eye rubbing, and using clean towels and tissues can prevent the spread of infection.
